Mestizo Arts Festival ** 16 – 31 October

Are you ready for a surprising and exciting arts festival? From the 16th of October until the 31st Mestizo Arts Festival will set foot on Antwerp ground again. The festival brings you a new wave of artists with their own view on cities of the future. You can expect an artistic experiment and a mix of theatre, music, dance and image. #MAF15 will show you what is going on in the big cities, with artists from Antwerp, Buenos Aires and Mexico. Every year the festival welcomes more than thousand people. The festival is organised for the 8th time, and the theme of this year is “The Wall”.

During the Mestizo Arts Festival artists will give their view on the urbanization. At #MAF15, 150 artists will reflect about walls around and between us. Walls not only have an impact on mobility, but also on the role of art within a society. Walls often are seen as an obstacle, but a wall can also function as a canvas. The program of the festival is really various, and that’s whats also the strength of the festival. The experience of the audience is the most important goal of the festival. Thisisantwerp had a closer look at the program and picked some favourites (also for English speaking audiences).

Street Art entering Theatres

Besides performances, you can also have a look at street art at the exhibition ‘Mural, the wall as canvas’. Contemporary artists have given their own interpretation of the work of Mexican muralist Diego Rivera. You can see these amazing pieces in wp Zimmer (Gasstraat 90) (Saner – Mexico), Arenberg Theatre (Arenbergstraat 28) (JAZ aka Franco Fasoli – Argentina), JOACHIM in DE Studio (Maarschalk Gerardstraat 4) and of Charlotte Dumortier, El Neoray, Jos Verwer, Jango Jim en Rein Vyncke in KOP vzw (Jan van Gentstraat 6). The mural at Antwerpen Luchtbal (station) is also used in the campaign of MAF15.

Practical information? | The murals are on permanent display during the opening hours of the participating cultural institutes. During the Mestizo Arts Festival you can participate in a guided tour on October 27, 28 and 29. And afterwards? No one knows. The exhibition does not have an expiration date. All participating cultural institutes decide for themselves how long they will enjoy or tolerate the wall paintings.

MAF resto

Besides all the events you can also eat at the MAF resto in Arenberg. Every day, except on the 16th, 20th, 24th and 28th you can meet up with your friends (or you can go by yourself) and have a bite for only €10,- before you visit the festival. Make sure you make a reservation at least 3 days beforehand. Join #MAF15 in the search of new imagination and new art forms in the city without losing sight of what is already there. There is also a wide variety of Dutch speaking performances, movies and plays. For more information on the festival and the program visit
